I need some help with the bastard setup for the ignition system in my truck. The previous owner put a junkyard V-8 motor in the truck and it used to have a straight six.
So now it has a distributor with vaccum advance and some type of ECU. All I know is that it will not fire without the ECU hooked up, so currently I have it just "monkey wired" for moving it in and out of the garage while I rebuild the wire harness.
Here are some photos of the setup and the plugs to the distributor. My main question is if I can just dump the ECU somehow since it is just a simple carbed V-8 and no emmissions here in WI.

Here is the plug coming from the ECU to the distributor:

And a shot of the old harness coming from the ECU and going to the dist. Right now EVERYTHING is disconnected in this harness except the plug at the ECU and the plug to the dist (that 4 pin weatherpack connector pictured above). The pink wire is broken out and exposed because I have to power with 12V that pink wire to make it run.

And a final shot of my cheesy temporary wire mess for running it. So to recap: It has a MSD 6a ignition on it with a carbed 350 motor. Right now it runs if I put 12v to the small black plug going to the dist. on the red wire. One white coming from the MSD also hooks into that little 3 pin black plug too. The other plug out of the dist. is that 4 pin weatherpack connector with the green, white, black and brown wires. That plug must be connected to the ECU to run as well. All that part of the harness needs is 12v on the pink wire going to the ECU. Pretty simple setup it seems really. I just wanna get rid of the ECU or the whole dist. setup if it is not the right one for my application. If I do need something else, does anybody have any suggestions? Probably just a simple vaccum advance distributor setup?

If memory serves, you can unplug the 4wire harness, and jump #1 and #4 wires on the distributor side of the harness to byoass the ECM and make it run.
If not...
Unplug the 4wire connector and let it hang.
Yank that CC-HEI distributor out, and drop in a plain old HEI distributor with a vac advance and you'll be on your way.

Ok, thanks for the help Don. This confirms my thinking that this distributor in the truck is the wrong one for my particular application.
