MY 79 CHEVY 4X4 HAS A OVERCHARGING PROBLEM. OCCASIONALLY WHILE DRIVING THE VOLT METER WILL GO OFF THE SCALE. I CAN HEAR WIRES POPPING UNDER THE DASH. I SHUT IT OFF AND TURN IT BACK ON AND IT IS FINE FOR ANOTHER DAY OR SO. VOLTAGE REGULATORS ON TWO DIFFERENT ALTERNATORS CHECK GOOD. HELP.

It has to be a voltage regulator problem, and the fact that it's an "Occasional" problem is the reason why the regulators are turning out to be fine. The only other possibility is that you have a short somewhere in the harness between the gauge and the alternater or possibly you have dual batteries or did at one time that the battery isolator is shorting out. Next time it pegs the gauge, hit the brakes so the brake ligths put a load on the electrical along with turning on the high beams. I have a 63 amp alternoter on my truck and when i hit the brakes and have the highs on the gauge drops down to about 13 volts instead of the 14.6 it usually reads. If your gauge goes down to where it should when you put a load on it and theres nothing else malfuntioning then that is most likely your problem. You may want to try a different place to get your alternotor from. I bought one from pep boys for my 1987 Camaro and it lasted about an hour and then all the sudden the car stalled out with a dead battery. I had to drive it home with my foot on the gas at all time cause it wouldn't charge unless the engine was at 1500 rpm or higher. I got another alternter from them and drove around the block and popped the hood to test it with my volt moter and the thing cought on fire right before my eyes. I was pissed off to say the least, pep boys also gave me a run of bad water pumps, after the third one and also the alternator, i go to the dealer and pay twice as much cause it's gonna last more then a day.
