Help please, I own a 1979 GMC 4x4 Sierra Granda 1/2 Ton. It has a newly rebuilt 350 engine in it. My problem is the ignition module or control module in the distributor keeps getting fried after a couple of months of driving it. Its a new HEI distributor with new generator, new battery, new starter. I know when it goes bad because the engine will crank but won't start. But when I throw a new module in it ,it cranks right up on the first crank and last a few months before going out on me again. Please can anyone help me with this?

Are you applying the silicone grease to the bottom of the module before placing it in the distributor housing? The grease is there to dissipate the heat away from the module.

hahahaha, I had this same problem. It would drive me nuts, it took me about 4 before I figured out what the hell was going on. I cannot remember what style you need exactly but it was something like that didn't have a vacum advance or something like that. I ended up gettting an older style distributer from a friend but I cannot remember the specifics of it. I am at college right now so I can't even go look at the truck to see what I have on there. But the problem is with the distributer. I will try and remember what one I put on if not I will find out when I go home for a break.
Good luck Dan

It's possible that the pickup coil inside the distributor is on the way out, and shorting the module. I'm not sure if your local parts place can get one for you, but they are relatively easy to change. You will have to pull the distributor out and tear it down though...

I would like to take this time and thank everyone who helped me on this I haven't been able to work on it yet, but I will. If anyone else has any suggestions feel free to let me know. I also have a brand new Mallory Distributor I want to put in it, but I'm not sure if I should wait till I get this problem fiqured out first, or I put it in to see if it is the distributor causing this problem. I also have a MSD ignition box I want to put on it also, but afraid to right now because of this problem.

Did you fix it yet?
My thoughts are that it might be due to a lousy ground. Typically a repeated faiulre of electrical parts is due to @#itty wireing / connectors / broken connections.
Can you find the primary ground for the circuit and test it (or just flat out re-wire it temporary to ground for troubleshooting purposes). If you make it longer then you used to and it runs fine, then you know its the ground that way. Not to hard to do either in terms of time to do it!
