hi, i drive a 1980 gmc sierra grande with a 350 ci 5.7L and a TH350 transmission. engine oil coolers and transmission oil coolers, i guess they are two different coolers, i have an engine oil cooler, it's like a little radiator mounted next to the condenser which sits in front of the car. the engine oil cooler runs via an oil filter adapter to the engine.i don't know if this is actually of any great use to my truck but i have it so i guess i will mount it anyway. my question is about the transmission oil cooler, i believe that is also like a small radiator that is mounted in front of the car close to the condenser, right? is this also with lines ? where do they attach? is such a cooler necessary? on my tranny i have standard oil cooler lines that run to the big radiator in front of the car, aren't these enough?

They are enough, unless you are planning on hauling some heavy loads on a freeway somewhere, for a very long distance at high speeds. I have one on my 1978 Big 10, my truck was used for hauling 7000 lb. 5th. wheel trailer at freeway speeds, back and forth to Florida, USA. Approximately 900 miles one way. The cooler kept the tranny from burning up. There is also a trans temp gauge located on my dash. To tell the temp of the fluid in the pan, and if I am on the freeway for 50 miles with no load, it runs at 160 degrees F. So, I guess under these current conditions my tranny will last forever.

Well all my auto get a trans cooler. Helps to prolong the life of the trans . But you do not need it . Ask said it is a + if towing any time you can take heat out of motor or trans the better it is or even electronic. Now if you do not drive car or truck more then say 10 Min's with all most no loads it might be waist of time hard on the trans in the northern area's. For the line they hook up to the trans lines between the rad with the rad still in use. is the better way this way you still get a bit of heat in the trans that it needs, but still has the benefit of the two rads cooling for later. I you buy a new one it should tell you the two ways to hook it up. or you can just run the trans lines to the cooler buy it self. I run all mine through both.
