I have a problem with my 1977 K20. I really do not know if it is really the tranny but I talked within a coworker today and he suggested something that I decided to research.
My truck was running fine. It was really cold (-10 F). I was at a friend's and when I left my truck was suddenly running rough. It was missing something ferocious. I was in 4wheel low and went to 2WHi once off the icy downhill road.. It ran rough until up to speed then seemed to run okay. I drove the 5 or 6 miles home.
When I used the truck on Monday, he started fine, idled nicely, seemed to be running okay. I put him into gear and when I started out my driveway he started running a little rough but could not really tell if he was missing. Seemed like it but my exhaust is split out the sides so I only really hear one side when moving. Got going down the road and got up to 55 mph. He seemed to run okay. Anyway, I got a load of gravel, 1300 lbs, and drove home. He ran somewhat rough, wouldn't accelerate very well.
When I checked him on Tuesday, after unloading the gravel, he started fine, idled. I drove him out and he started running rough. Acted like he was getting flooded when I pressed on the gas. I went home. Checked all wires and vacuum lines; all looked good. Decided I needed to dig further.
I have been using some tranny fluid but can find none on the tranny or the ground underneath. Engine has at least 210,000 miles with nothing done (that I know of) other than normal maintenance since I got him 16 years ago. Tranny was rebuilt about 12,000 miles ago.
My friend suggested the modulator was leaking and the fluid was going into the engine. I did have to replace the brake booster last summer but do not know if it had tranny fluid get into it.
I thank you for reading this long post but I wanted to try to say everything that I would if I was talking to you face to face.
