Well, to make a long story short, I realized I in fact do not have a 700R4, but rather a TH350. I dont know if someone changed the dash to one that has the overdrive label on it, or if the tranny went bad. I can tell the tranny has been removed before since the underside is all scratched, the rear drive shaft is dented, and the bolt heads arent too great looking. So now - what should I do? I deliver pizzas for a living now, so I would really love to save gas mileage by having overdrive. I also plan on using my truck to haul my AMC 300 miles sometimes so I can go drag race it. So all in all - which tranny is more reliable? If I drop in a 700R4, will I have to change the driveshaft? Mine has a 2 piece shaft, but who knows if that was stock. I know the shaft(s) arent since they have some kind of label on them. The tranny itself seems to be fine. Doesnt consume fluid, has a minor leak, and that's about it. What should I do?

If the tranny has been changed to a Turbo 350 the driveshafts are probably the same as the ones used for the 700r4. Unless the turbo 350 is a short shaft. If you want to put a 700r4 back in it, it would be fairly easy to do. If the turbo 350 is a short shaft, you can get another driveshaft from a salvage yard for your truck with a 700r4. But I would bet money that then one you have will work. Swappeing to a 700r4 will only require moving the crossmember back a bolt hole, and the holes are already there. The 700r4 will get you better gas milage and can handle towing your AMC, just make sure when rowing to do it in drive (3rd gear) not overdrive. Adding an external cooler will also help it out alot. You could probably ask around a get some of your money back by selling the Turbo 350 since it is still in good shape. Other wise just drive it till it gives then get another tranny for it. If you do get a 700r4 make sure it's newer than 86. The older models are small shafts and aren't as good. The newer 700r4's have an electronic speedo drive but this can be switched over to cable real easily with donor parts from an older model.

Lately my tranny is not shifting into third until 4000rpm. Anyone know why?

Sounds like a stuck valve in the valve body. Although Squidward would be the one to give a better answer. Squidward

I'll second that BTG. As long as just the 2-3 shift is late, and not the 1-2 shift, it sounds like some crud got into the 2-3 shift valve in the valve body.

When you drop the pan the filter is there. When you takeout the filter you see what looks like worm holes. Clean those out and replace your fluids and your filter. I had the same problem and after the fluid change it was fine.
