1) Where can i get a stock HEI unit? i would prefer new, but will consider remanufactured. i know jegs/summit carry them but i want a completely stock unit----no fancy race/hi-performance advance curves. a) have you used/seen/or have experience with one of these? www.jegs.com/p/Moroso/748779/10002/-1/11569Would the distributor need to be taken out to install this? 2)If it is nessesary to custom tailor ignition wires to length, how do we go about doing this? I.e., crimping etc. Please be very detailed; Beginner here. 3) How would you go about installing a new distributor in an engine that has a distributor presently installed? Again, please be very detailed.

If your on a buget its going to be way cheaper to find a used one cause you can find them anywhere. And just replace any parts that need to be. You can clean them up to look new and you just saved yourself couple hundred bucks

Ok lets see. First: That a big yes for this part and you have to take your intake off and have it milled @ the hole and a little bit of the back of the intake Manifold, then two screws have to be drilled. It does work good once you have the car or truck set up right and take note at the timmimg marks let's you ajust the dist after with out haveing the timming gun. Foe the most aprt you have to take out the dist housing .So no it not real easy to work it out . I think there a few palces that say how to take out & re install the dist housing. check the messageson the board here first. thanks.

Thanks everyone for the help. i think what i am going to do for now is replace only the rotor, wires and, if nessesary, the plugs because i feel an intermittent miss would more likely be the result of those three things not the distributor body itself. But, in obtaining plug wires, we encounter a problem; Let's take a look at this picture: By the way welcome to my jungle. Feel free to either ridicule, pity, or feel smug that you don't have to deal with this mess each time you open your hood. (actually, vacuum hoses fascinate me) What i'm trying to do is get some pre-made plug wires. i don't mind having to make my own lenghts, but i would rather get them pre-made if at all possible this time. i noticed, looking thru the jegs catalog, that most of the plug wire companies sell kits for the SBC in either "over valve cover" OR "under header" (exhaust manifold) kits. As you can see, i have, along with millions of other stock setups, have the wires on the passenger side go over the valve covers (2,4,6,8), but on the driver's side, they go behind the head then underneath the exhaust manifold---cyls 1,3,5 and 7. Which kit should i get? Also, your recommendations as far as plug wires? i'm looking at the Accel super stocks.

First do you know what wire clips your motor has the ones for the behind the under the Manifold or the one's over the valve cover side clips ? . Now the other thing is what set up are you looking for ? . You said you like Accel wires & your looking at them. I like them have used them a lot, and used other replace -ment types. Try this site or order a book www.accel-ignition.com/this should show you a few different styles from like stock to the nicer ones/ all the wires . If you want it Factory try the dealer or A/c Delco dealer. I took a quick look but not sure if they show pic's any more. I know the book's did. they used to send a free or $1.00 for the book maybe up to $5.00 .
