I have just installed a new GM crate engine with an Edelbrock 2701 and a 1406 carb. I have not fired up the engine yet. The Intake Gasket had the EGR ports blocked off, we opened them up during the install so we could use the stock EGR valve. Later on we discovered the stock EGR valve would not fit (should have checked this earlier) Is it OK to now (with those ports open) use the block off plate and NOT use the EGR valve? Will the gases going through the ports effect anything or heat up anything like the carb? Note the 2701 and 1406 say NON-EGR but yet advertised for pre 86 vehicles that actually have EGR.?? Why is that

OK... My bad! no wonder why no one has responded. The port in the 2701 is for the divorced choke... not the EGR. an EGR intake for a SB is the 3701.
So now my question would be, the choke "stove" ports that I did not plug are OPEN. Is those being open going to affect anything? I have an electric choke. ??

I would get new gaskets or the the small gasket block off plates. Does it have the out side hole blocked off or is it opened I know with the 2101 it still has the opening they most time new come with a block off cap & gasket. That could be a vac. leak, would be better to block off the unless going to use it. it should say a little bit about it in the install paper you got with it depending on what year, what style system your going to set it up as or what parts your not useing on it. I hope this helps a little untill some one can tell you better.

The only time those ports flow any considerabe amount of exhaust thought them is when there is a heat riser valve on the exhaust manifold. It resticts exhaust flow on one side, forcing it to flow through the intake manifold to heat the carb up for cold weather operation.
I saw a picture of the recommened intake gasket (Eddy p/n 7201)on the Edelbrock webside and it comes with restriction plates for the EGR passage, not block-off plates.
I think you'll be fine. I've been running open inake gaskets like that for years with no ill-effects. But if you are still concerned, you can spend a half hour and a few bucks to replace the intake gaskets with blocked ones.
