ok, just put a brand new rebuilt 350 into my 83' k10. broke in the cam and runs spectacular, but after breaking in the cam at 2000 rpm oil pressure drops from 35 psi to 6 or 7 psi at idle. i am running a stock volume oil pump (brand new) and should be getting around 25-30 psi idling, right? i cant think of what the problem could be. all bearing clearances are good. nothing knocks or chatters, even after the truck is warmed up and idling. is there any thing that is commonly overlooked when rebuilding a motor in regards to the oiling system. - thanks guys

Well first thing Is question you say you broke the motor in,? what oil was in the motor when you started up. Is it got all the lubes grease in the oil or did you change the oil once yet & what grade oil did you uses. Now what grade oil in the motor, how long did you run the motor, what temp is the motor when the oil drops. Now the the oil is cold start it up let it warm up does it show high oil pressure again.
There a problem some times with the oil pick up coming loose and falling off, Some people get them welded if you get the pick up weld on. **( before you do the welding take out the spring the heat from welding runes the spring then put it back before you put the pump back in). Most time if this happens on you will get no oil pressure ! the thicker the oil grade the more oil pressure you read un-till in @ driving temps then it drops down.
Cold oil will show a higher oil pressure un-till it get to running temps then it will drop. I forget now the exact # but it's from 5-12 psi for most stock oil pumps after running temp is hit. Oh when old oil is to old you see that it drops a little from what ever the normal psi @ running temp is for your motor and set up.( mostly likely need oil change, oil braking down.)
The hotter the oil is the more the PSI will drop until certain point and at lower RPM the oil pressure will be lower to.
I hope this helps a little or gave you some info.

hey, thanks pontiac helped a bunch. its the first 10w-30 oil for the motor, still has all the cam grease and everything. this is my first rebuild so it freaked me out when i saw it. i didnt know that the idle psi was that low for the stock pumps when the truck is warmed up. all of my friends pickups idle between 30-50 psi when warmed up. like i said the pressure will drop from 15 psi when cold to 6-7 psi at 190 f. - thanks again

Ok kool glad. Oh you should do a oil change very soon once the motor is had it warm up break-in and every thing working well(do any of the re -TQ's that need to be done as in the book). Put new filter and oil in once you know it's working OK then keep any eye on the gauge as what is the normal range it run at as the oil gets close to oil change or oil start to break down you start to see what the reading should be in time after a few oil changes seasons you know just by a glance at the gauge what the normal reading in uses. The first build is all was kool . if you did it by the book. you should be OK for a long time as long as nothing false or get loose . enjoy
