has anyone done, or considered converting to a diesel engine? i'm gettin' into this green thing and started reading about getting horsepower as well as obvious torque from the diesel and I can make my own fuel. anyone know what would be involved, other than the obvious......a lot. thoughts or suggestions are appreciated. oh yea, or, if anyone has a classic chevy diesel, standard cab, short bed, then, maybe I can just buy what i'd create. thanks.

If you can find a Truck that is factory diesel you would be in better shape. I don't know what your local laws are but with emissions coming into play, it will be difficult to get inspected in some states. If you do consider it, there are a lot of parts you need to look for. Main thing is the hydraulic power brake booster that works along with the power steering. You will not have a vacuum source to run the power brake booster in your truck with a diesel engine. Fuel pump will be needed along with cleaning out your fuel tank. Cooling will need to be addressed and upgraded. There is a lot of work to consider here, but if done right could be very beneficial, but in the end it all boils down to what you want.

also, bowtieguy, I think i'm good with emissions, and, I realize what an undertaking it would be, but, i'm up for it, my local mechanic is up for it too. i'll need some detailed assistance on what i'll need. is there a reference or something, or can you put together something that would help? i'm sure my mechanic will know most of what we have to do, but, I don't think he's a "diesel" guy, so, all help is appreciated. i'd want a diesel engine that can be worked a bit, too, banks turbo, etc. i'm planning on restoring the whole truck anyway, so, it's just which direction I head, and the diesel direction, is where i'm looking. throw me every and anything you can think of or want to help with, I am greatly appreciative. thanks.

I apologize I don't have any references, just what I remember from a buddy of mine in Louisiana doing the same thing to his truck but in reverse. He went to gas from diesel. A few years back diesels were not considered performance engines of choice, yet diesel equipped trucks were since they were except from emissions. I also at one time owned a 1983 GMC Jimmy 4x4 with a 6.2 diesel. So all I can offer you is what I can remember. The radiator is a 4 core with a tranny cooler and oil cooler built in, where gas does not have the oil cooler. The diesel versions, like I mentioned before, the power brakes are hydraulic and run off the power steering pump instead of vacuum assisted. The heating and air controller on a gas is vacuum controlled also, not sure how it is operated on a diesel so you might want to check into that also. LMC or Year One would be a good place to check, if the parts are the same for both gas or diesel, they should be able to tell you. I can't think of anything else right now that would be different between the 2 but if I come up with something I will post it up asap. Banks makes good systems for diesel engines, that would be my choice also if I were going the same route. I also believe they make a twin turbo for these trucks. If there is anything else anybody else can think of please feel free to reply as well.
