If your heads were clogged and oil did not return to the pan then I would bet your rings are shot, do a compression test on each cylinder to check them.

From what your saying I thing a compressing test would be a good start, well you would have to have a compression tester gauge or rent one then screw it in each cylinder take a reading . You will have to disconnect the dist wire led hook up the gague to # one first turn over the motor three quick turns ( revelations three time ) write the # down do the same thing for each cylinder, do two reading take the higher of the two. Bowtie can tell you after you get the readings.

Even if the oil did go back down the damage is already done, I would do the test..

This is for HEI from 1975-1987 V8 Chev. The firing order is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 OK the motor left side is ( Driver side front near rad) 1- 3- 5- 7 , now the right side is ( passenger side front near rad) 2- 4- 6- 8 . For the distributor you got now. OK this is not stock but it will give you a idea how it sit in the car. The shine chrome thing on the left is the vacuum advance canisters it should be pointed to the passenger side like it sitting in the . www.msdignition.com/distributors/hei.gifSo the one on this side should be # eight then go clock wise 4-3-6-5-7-2-1 on the distributor. ( the part that sticks out that the wires go too. The one on the dash side is # 7 the one on the rad side of it would be # 2 ) does this help.
