I have a 1986 chevy c10 pickup. I purchased it a few years ago and am currently rebuilding it from the frame up It has a 12 bolt rear end in it. My understanding is that the last year chevy put a 12 bolt rear end in a c10 was 1981 is this true ? How can I find out what year the housing is. The only markings that I can find on the rear end is GM2 and 9969 does this mean anything to anyone? please help

Yes &, Yes yours would be a 10 bolt . if your truck has the order code on it with the code listed it will tell you the gears and diff it would come with.

If you are in doubt about what rear end you have then count the bolts on the rear over. The code gm2 means you have a 3.44 gear, IF noone has been inside it already and changed it out. If you do have a 12 bolt rear end, it was not the factory rear for that truck. Not sure what the 9969 stands for but I will check into it more and try to find out for you.

Bowtie do they put the order code for what the truck came with in some of the 1986 or did the stop that 1984 or 1985 If under hood on fender or in the glove box then it can be looked up find what it was for his truck.
