Hi Guys... New here! Well I just bought an 85 GMC K2500 and it has a few issues I'm trying to hammer out. It needs a new carb. Currently has the stock q-jet and it's tired. I don't think I want to rebuild it, would rather just replace. SO what should I get? What's the easiest replacement thats available that I wont need to change the intake. I am not necessarily looking for more performance. Just a great running truck. It is a 5.7 (stock) w/ 81K original. 4sp.

ok is it a for barrel or a two? either way you can go with holley. they have replacement q-jets for a couple hundred bucks. they are brand new never used units. instead of reman's. Doenst take much to tune them out of the box. they are pretty close.

First of all, that is one sweet truck. Personally, for a bone stock motor, I would have the Rochester rebuilt, they are very well tuned carbs, you want find a better carb for a stock motor. I've heard that the Holley "Rochester replacement" manages to combine the worst parts of the Holley with the worst parts of the Rochester. Holley carbs WILL run fine right out of the box, but will need some fine tuning to be as smooth as a Rochester. Same goes for the Ebelbrock performer. While a Rochester can be built for a high horsepower motor, it's not cheap or easy. Holley and edelbrock carbs are the way to go for anything beyond a mildly warmed over motor.

I bought a rebuild kit for my quadrajet a few weeks ago. Took most of a day to rebuild it and I took lots of pictures taking it apart so I would get it back together right. 100,000 miles on the carb and the rebuild kit cost $42. It was well worth it and now the engine runs much better and gets good fuel economy. Also replaced elec choke and fuel filter. Lots of quadrajet info on the internet to help w/ the rebuild. Seems to make sense to me to stay w/ the stock carb on a stock engine.

Thanks guys. I think I'm going to try and re-build it myself. Seems to be what most of my friends are saying also. It can't be rocket science... Right!
The picture taking is a good idea!

Well... UPDATE: I rebuilt it last Saturday. Wasn't that bad! I would defiantly do it again (on another carb) if I need to. I did remove a factory set screw I shouldn't have BUT I put it back only going by pictures I had and it seems to be working OK. I am currently playing around with the mixture to tune it up. Secondary s are NOT opening as they should, I'm going to mess w/ that tomorrow.

There are a few "tricks" to get the secondaries to work more like you want them to. You can adjust the top flaps to open sooner or later if you are interested in playing with this let me know and I will try to dig up the link I read it from and post it. The bottom flaps should work mechanically off the throttle.

I think that would be a good idea Bowtie. :DI know Holley better the square bores. I play with the Rochester now and then.

Here is a great site with loads of links on quadrajet info. I looked thru a few links posted there and found loads of great info some I didn't even know yet. Anyone that has or wants to use a quadrajet carb should read some of the info there. Hope it helps. www.florida4x4.com/tech/quadrajet/index.php
