My early 1978 Big ten with 350 cui, 350TH, Quadrajet carb, truck has the sticker on the air cleaner housing that states I should be running 91 octane fuel, my truck is supposed to be running regular leaded gas. Am currently using 87 octane unleaded. Should I be using lead substitue in my gas, and an octane booster? Cannot afjunky a$$ f@#d premium unleaded! If I make my own octane booster, can I still use unleaded? Or do I have to add lead substitute also? I think the timing has been messed with to reduce pinging and knocking with unleaded regular. I have no cats on my truck. however I think I still feel a little lag (pinging or knocking) upon acceleration.

"Gas"It might be better to try the next grade up I think it 89 med grade will not be to much more see how it runs. it will be hard to find leaded regular gas now a days after 74 most are made to run on unleaded . the only thing is to get the octane up if your pinging. (1) Now I have a question how much is gas all three 87, 89, 91where you are. (2) Now how much is the octane boots per bottle if used in one tank, how many do you need to bring up to 91 octane.
(3) If you can make your octane boost cheap then do so that will help

Pontiac76, I have a website here that has homebrew octane booster formula's, go to www.gnttype.org/techarea/misc/octanebooster.html see what you think. Has anyone on this site used these formulas before? I know that this site is using these formulas for racing, but they should work for every day use also, I would think? They suggest that you start with 91 already in your tank, but why wouldn't they boost yer octane of 87 - 89 up to 91 or better? I am just asking, before I possibly blow me or my truck up with these mixtures. Or worse yet, turn my truck into a fire breathing dragster...... Larry

I would be careful with making the stuff for sure. But if you look at the IE. FORMULA 5 Isopropyl Alcohol and Tertiary Butyl Alcohol R+M/2...101 Cost...$0.60-$1.50/gal Mixtures with 92 Octane Premium 10%...94.5 Octane 20%...Not Recommended <<<<<<<<< 30%...Not Recommended <<<<<<<<< Notes: Similar to Methanol/Ethanol. Isopropyl Alcohol is simply rubbing alcohol. This is the easiest I use to do this be for the pumps started 5 Yrs . They do it up here in Canada. All most all them do it now. I use mostly Sunoco reg switch to 89 now and then if needed. I use Sunoco gold for the car's @ the track. Now your only going up .2 or .3 on every 12-16 ounces per gal to start with 87 that a lot to go up . watch the guide lines they give you you could hurt the heads seals or pistons valves if to much of one thing . it could be done I guessing but it really up to price time then you have to store the stuff. The higher the octane rating the easier it is to make higher. I would like to here how you make out with prices what was the best or easiest to get set up worked best for the lower octane rating. I have to give this some thought when I see the formula you work out . Good link kool

well then, I guess I just oughta buy some Sunoco gas at higher grades and try that, but it is almost 4.50 a gallon here so maybe half tank of that and other half regular grade.
