hi, my engine is a 1975 V8 350ci 5.7L i am building all the A/C parts on the engine. (compressor, 2 row pulleys,..) before the truck did not have a/c. i can not line up all my pulleys correctly , i think it is because of the balancer, a friend of mine has several V8's in his garage and i have noticed that their balancers are thicker than mine , they are like 43millimeter(i think that is about 1.69 inch..), mine is not that thick. so i guess that is the reason my pulleys dont't line up correctly. does any body have the answer to my question? thanks a lot, kurt

I'm just guessing your crank pulley is a two belt set up. Most crank pulley that have A/c have the three belt set up. As for the balancers that your friend motors what yr are most of them, can you tell if they are all 350's or 305's. Because the 305 balancer is fater just a little has opening at the back up to about 88 or 90 yr, then all the balancer wear made the same that one of the little tricks to tell a 305 from a 350 with out runing the #'s . There a few set ups pulleys or the water pump might have the two or three grooves you will have to see what set will work for you. Could be two crank slot & three slot water, or three with three or other versions. what ever makes your set up work. Another question since your using the newer A/c compressor is v belt or serpentine belt. You might have to get the two belt style pulleys that have both belts. There was two set up's for the v belts, a Three belt set up or a two belt set up. Does your friend have any pulley that are different you could take to see if they work then you know what one might need. Most the pulley will have the #'s stamped on them to.

hi pontiac, i have included with my answer another picture, you can see on the picture that i have the waterpump with a 2 row pulley and the cranckpulley is the black one under the engine on the floor, it is a three row pulley. you can also see another engine lying next to mine, if you look closely you can see that the engine has a thicker balancer than mine( the two row cranckpulley on that engine is also mine)i believe that the other engine is a 1981 engine.I will use V belt.

Have you had the belts on yet and what one will not line up. Is the crank pulley the one that was with the motor or is it one that you got from some one when you wear buying bracket & pulleys.
Is the water pump pulley from your motor or is it one you picked up.
I see the pulley # on water pump in the big close up pic that you said you want it to look like. see if your has the same # .
Well the that might be the problem as you think. But I like to know what #'s are stamped on the pulleys can you find them, Oh and some of the 81-87 With A/c all so used three grooved water pumps pulleys too. Can you tell me the belts that do not line up, what side do they fall short of the groove & what pulley from pulley. If any belts running for what to what witch one work. Have you had the balancer off can you see a stamping # of 458652 on it.

hi pontiac, it's the harmonic balancer pulley that will no line up with the waterpump pulley.the waterpump pulley that is on my engine now is not the original, the original was a sinle row pulley and the balancer that is now on my engine is the original but i guess i need a thicker one(the balancer in the close up foto is thicker than mine.)my engine was originally not with the A/C setup. my engine is a '75 and my friend his engine is a '81, does that make a difference to the front of the engine? or are all the mounting holes , like for the waterpump and such the same ? i am looking now for a thicker harmonic balancer (about 1.70)

You know if you had the balancer off and did not put it back on in the same place that might be it to as a side note. Because the balancer used with the engine is most often better to use, unless it no good . Now I after market balancer with my Pontiac set up all same pulleys I had to adjust the balancer just a little.. GM made a few different types of Pulley and bracket can change stuff so much that one of the biggest thing trying to make a set up unless you know the pulley # you need & brackets and there is about three different belt set up one set up. Question are you trying to run the belts the same way as the motor you said your trying look like. The bolt should not matter if it GM SBC
Oh My Pontiac is all Chev drive train GM Canada and the balancer is Fluid damper .

What yr is the motor on the floor is it a 305 did it have A/c and the pulley take your pulley juts see if the # are the same and the height same & the grooves are the same spacing apart.. If you can take the balancer off & pulley to try it and it works . Then you have to find # on the two parts. I try to see If friend has the 81-86 A/c short bed still & pulleys Try to find # on them.

Kool. but can I ask about the balancer is hallod out at the back of it. Or is it solid through like the one you took off. Now if there both 350 then there no problem. if it's the like the 88 newer style balancer it should be ok. would not be a balanced as good if it's the older hallod out one on a 350 motor. just a note.
