Just got my truck 2 weeks ago put in a eld intake manifold and carb. When i went to put my distrubutor i notice the truck had no timing plate. I guessed my lining up the notch but the truck will not turn over. Is there any way to time the truck by taking the valve covers off and watching number 1 cylinder. And should i bolt the distrubutor all the way down before trying. Thanks

I suggest purchasing an aftermarket timing tab for your application, and installing it. You will have to know the diameter of the balancer to get the right one for your truck.
It's just a matter of a couple bolts to get a tab installed.

If you don't bolt the dist. down snug it will change time with the vibration of the motor. And if it is too loose it will jump a tooth! I hate when that happens

gman I had that same problem. I purchased my truck and I went to do a tune up and found that I had no timing tab. Mr. Gasket makes a nice timing tab that comes with a large red pointer very nice and very cheap $5-$8 I would recommend that you also buy/hook up a remote starter switch (cheap tool buy at sears under $10 very handy to have) disconnect your coil, pull the drivers side valve cover and dist cap rotate the engine until you are sure that the #1 cylinder is at top dead center on the compression stroke (you will know this because both valves will be closed easy to see this with valve cover removed) then be sure your dist rotor is pointed toward the #1 cylinder and that your timing mark is lined up with zero degree mark on your new timing tab. Once you have confirmed this you can now be sure that your timing will be absolutely correct and will run great.

Your Timing tab may be hidden!!!!!
Try looking down between the water pump and the block.. below the pump the there's the tab... i hunted and hunted for the tab before locating it there... (weird place to put it if you ask me, but it does keep it protected from being banged around.
