Feathering your firewall and putting on a new coat is just fine, but it really depends on what you want in the end . A paint job is only as good as the base. A rough finish under the paint will give the final coat a textured look.
For the engine itself... after washing it with water to remove any residue... any parts store should have engine paint. It is designed specifically for use on engines.
Rattle cans are the only way to go, and buy 2 cans of the color you want for the block. I would also suggest a can of black for any brackets and accy's. I have been known to paint the iron intake silver to give it a nice contrast to the block, and give the distributor base a coat of silver to dress it up while you're there.
We stock blue, orange, and black engine enamel at the dealership.

Nope, for some strange reason, we just don't sell a whole lot of that color...

Ok.. so i fanned it all out went and bought some duplicolor engine crap at the local shucks.. awe shucks they sold me junk once again... so i canned it starting with the inside of the hood.. after it was done i experianced some chipping and some parts come out shiney otherd dill.. lots of streaking i also painted my firewall.. and wheelwells .. they look a lil better but still experiencing little chipping is this due to me sucking ass at painting should i go ove and over again?.. or is this due to the junkey paint i bought... Thnax again WhiteNProud

I use duplicolor all of the time.. did you sand the area? and make sure it was clean? You didn't use block paint on the other items right?

As cheap as this sounds I used the .99 rattle cans from Home Depot. The paint is still where I put it on the motor, and as long as I put many thin layers it looks pretty good. Some paint stores have the automitive paint you can buy in a rattle can instead of using the air compressor.
