i want to put a 6 cylinder in my 79 short bed. i'm tired of all the V-8 stuff, i want to be different and 10mpg sucks. what kind of mileage can i expect from any 6 in a fullsize.

I actually got better gas mileage when I replaced the 250 I-6 in my truck with a 350. The 350 doesn't have to work very hard to move it around...

what kind of gas mileage could i expect with a 250 or a 4.3L. 10mpg just isn't good enough, i need at least 15. Besides, six cylinders are cool, no one thinks of them as performance motors and i love that annoying pissed off bumble bee sound they make with the right exhaust. I want simple and reliable, the 350 is that but I would like to turn my truck into a daily driver, I've had it for 3 years and it has only left town once. please give me some info

Well, when I pulled the "buzzin half dozen" out of mine, I was getting 10 mpg on average. The 350 I ended up putting in there would get 17-19...

This is a good one.... if you see my sons truck in the Photo section you can see that it had a 250 inline six. turbo 350 and 411 gears..... avg MPG was about 7 MPG really a gas sucker. we rebuilt the carb, replaced manifolds, tuned up the HEI and did just about everything to assist the MPG I suppose the worst thing is that this old guy really had a hard time running when it got hot, it liked to stall, burp, gasp, and had NO real power.
So we swapped to a v/8
4 bolt main 350 Stone Stock Edelbrock proformer carb and intake Stock HEI Stock Exaust manifolds ( dual exaust) 2004R transmission
Gas milage has indeed increased I believe its around 12 MPG
We will be changing ther rear end next possiblly a 3:73
This truck gets driven by a 16 year old to school and work.
I was not impressed with how we had it always keep your "foot" into the six to keep it going!
Thats my two cents.

3.73 is a good ratio for these trucks even with the 350 in it. The '77 4x4 I had did very well with this set of gears.
It was a VERY noticable increase in fuel mileage when I went to the V8, and to top it off, it actually made decent power!

The old 292 is a nice motor, but you might have a real time finding one. You probably won't experience much different than what you're hearing on this board, but under 10mpg seems awfully low to me.
It'll depend alot on your gears, too.
