Hey guys, 1. I have power brakes with a problem where I have to pump the brakes once before stopping. If I only press once and try to come to a stop the pedal is hard and does not stop the truck very good. If I pump once then press again to stop the brakes seem to work much better but still not great. Rather than replacing everything I thought I might pick your brains to see if anyone has had this problem. Is it a bad booster? Master cylinder? both? 2. My second problem is I have a lot, let me repeat in caps A LOT of play in the steering. I haven't even looked at yet I just wanted to see where you guys think I might start looking. I have power steering which works great but when I go down the road I have loads of play in the wheel its actually so bad that I will not let my wife drive the truck until I fix it. I can turn the wheel going down the road from 12 o clock to 10 o clock then to 2 o clock with little or no movement and still be going straight down the road. Any ideas what to check first? Bad steering box? Is it easy to adjust steering boxes? I have never done that before. Thanks in advance for your help.

Let me ask you a couple of questions...With that six inch lift; what steering corrections have you applied? If just a dropped pitman arm, the tierod ends could be toast,or somthing as siple as a bad steering stablizer. When did the problem start?

I bought it about a month ago with the lift already installed. So it has always done this since Ive owned it. But now its time to fix the steering and brakes.

You got any pics of your steering setup? No but I will take some today or tomorrow and post them. 1 question? Can pics be posted in these normal posts or only in the Truck photo forum?

If they have to do with what you are talking about they don't get mad if you post them here.

#1 My first suspect is the booster. Second suspect...master cylinder.
#2 You are going to have to crawl under the front of your truck while someone turns the steering left to right with the engine off. You are looking for any joint in the steering system that has play in it. I know that my '77 with 33's on it used to eat up the drag link joints quite often. This link is the one that is connected to the crescent shaped unit at the LS steering knuckle.
Be sure to check all the joints. If you see no play in any of the joints, the steering box is worn and in need of replacement. There are some that will tell you to adjust the box using the preload screw at the top of the box to take the slop out of it, but this is just a bandaid fix and will not give you a long term repair.
