ok like everyone else i didnt know where to put this so it ended up here..
I have a 78 C10 custom deluxe. The rear end is going out in it.. the gears and/or axles grind when i drive. it took it to a mechanic but the told me my spider gears were screwed up (not sure what he ment by that) and he said my axle ends were tinted blue.. Im assuming from the grinding(heat). Now my questions.. the rear end is a 12 bolt not sure what the ratio is, but what is a good rear end to replace it with and how much should i pay for a used one. Ive seen from $150 to $600. Secondly.. I would like to eventually put a 350 in it.. (the 250 isnt cutting it), a manual trans, and make it 4x4. should i look into getting a front and rear end for the 4x4 now. and how hard is it to make a 2x4, 4x4?
sorry for the extensive post but I Dont Know What to DO! Any help is appreciated Zac

Unless you are really into a lot of grinding, welding measuring pinion angles, setting castor and dealing with the steering to start............. I would just go find a 4x4 that has all of the stuff you are looking for...It is not easy to convert a 2x4 to a 4x4 but it can be done by a competent fabricator.

I did a little extra searching of my own and ive determined that 4x4 is not the way to go for me... so now my thinking is MORE POWER! i would like to street rod it now but I dont know what rear end to buy since mine is still shot. I would like to put in a manual trans and a V8 ( 350-454 not sure yet). What are some good transmissions and rear end to use?

The 12 bolt is a pretty strong rear end. I heven't replaced anything on mine and it has 334,000 miles on it. It has a little whine to it at 40 moh and at 80mph but it has done that since i got the truck from my dad when it had 220,000 miles on it so i'm not worried. I'm just going to rebuild the whole thing when it comes time, new axles bearings, ring and pinion, i'll stick with the same 3.08 gears cause it gets pretty decent milege with those and i'm probably going to change it to posi but i'll decide that later and see how much extra it will cost. I run a turbo 350 with a Trans Go shift kit and it kicks good and will scratch the tires when you get on it which i love. If you go the big block route you'll need a turbo 400 otherwise you'll just keeping blowing transmissions. I've heard a lot of good stuff about the TCI's and they arent too expensive in Summit. When my trans goes out i'm putting in a 700 r4, i'm hoping to get my gas milege from the current 15mpg on the highway to closer to 20mpg, that would be cool as hell. Plus the 700r4 has a lower 1st and 2nd gear which improves your take off which would be good on my truck since i run the 3.08's in the back. It's pretty high, i can go like 45 in first and about 80 in second, and in 3rd it runds out of gear at 130, so year the gears are high...

have you look to replace the spider gears and bearing. you might find some good spider gears at a junk yard.

In regards to your 12 bolt, have you had the rear cover off yet?...If so does it have the clutch packs in it? If it does not have the clutch packs in the carrier, you might be able to get a locker to take place of the spider gears and then get a new ring and pinion gears (I have 350 gears and a locker in a 9" rear end in my '79 GMC step side) The locker can also be put in GM rear ends but they can't have clutch packs in them
