Just curious....... What do I have in my truck? It looks like an alternator, but acts like a generator. When Idling at a traffic light with headlights on, volts gauge drops really low on scale. When I step on gas, it shows just slightly higher than charging (mid gauge) and stays there as long as I have foot on gas. I have seen reference somewhere that some of the 1978 Big Tens came with 69 amp generators. 1978 Big ten, 350cui, TH350, Quadrajet. Thanks

DONT THINK I HAVE EVER SEEN A GENERATOR ON THAT YEAR,HAVE SEEN ALT WITH EXTERNAL VOLTAGE REGULATOR,WITHOUT SEEING WHAT YOU HAVE I WOULD SAY ALTERNATOR

Hello there boys . 73-87 have ALT (Alternator) that sound like it working OK. head light take a bit of power, and really see it a stops at night because the older up to 88 idle at about 550 - 600 RPM most do not start to kick in the extra until 900 to 1000 RPM. Most ALT with out A/c will be 37 amps . The newer style 88 & up charge more at lower rpm then the 87 and older ALT. The other thing is to make sure all the grounds are good to the help a little. You can pop the truck in "N" when you come to stops at night with the light s on & this will help this a little to. The more stuff on the electrical on the truck the more you see it at night with the lights on & brakes on.
