some 80s GM trucks and other cars with V8s like caprice and monte carlo, had computer controled distrubers and carburators. Not vary sofisticated, usually messed up and people would unplug them. A couple months ago a 86 truck was towed to our shop with a no start. It still had this junk hooked up. We bypassed something (can't remeber exactly) and it started and ran good. Most trucks have the wiring harness cut at the fire wall just to the passenger side of the distributor by now. Mine did when I got it in the mid 90s. I think you have to use an older style HEI when doing this, but the carb will still work with the sensors unplugged. But the older quadrajets are still better. I have a marine quadrajet right now. No emissions crap and no sensors.

I would say sneakysnake is right probably. I have an 86 K-10 that had that wacky little "emissions control" ECM under the dash near the glove box area. It had been disconnected for years by the time I found it.
My other thought was that it was some type of cruise control box??
What model is your truck? Give us some more info if you could.

ive got a 83' chevy k-10 alot of the electrical had been stripped out by the previous owner and ive put alot of it back in the box looks pretty important, i thought that a ecm was only on california trucks, my emmissions label is low altitude, manufactured in louisiana, i dont know, maybe it is ecm and somebody bypassed it?

Uh-huh. One plug.
That little module isn't much more then an electronic spark timing adjustment module from my understanding. (Somebody please correct me if wrong!) ;D
Depends on what type of distributor you are running.
I know personally, now that I am using a points style distributor that all the wiring garbage that went to that thing is gone after I have rewired the harness.
You don't need it if you've got a simple distributor.

That might be the dist with the extra plug, newer style big plug four pin plug. That mean you should have a big flat four wire ( like round tubes on the end in the middle of the firewall to the passenger side.) The dist, will the reg three wire plug come out of the dist. & a four wire plug too. I have a pic to show you the Dist.
