I'm new to this site and I'm hoping you guys can help me out. I installed a new starter on my '77 GMC a couple months ago. I didn't put a shim in at the time as it seemed to crank fine. In the morning the engine turns over fine and it starts right up. Lately, though, after the motor gets hot it barely turns over. It sounds like it is grinding. Sometimes it will start; other times I need to wait until it cools down then it starts. I thought it might need a shim so I put one in but still the same problem. Another gearhead told me the timing might be off, but the motor runs fine when it gets started. The battery and alternator have both been checked and they are working good. I suppose it is possible that I bought a starter that was no good, but before I replace it I would like to see what other think the problem might be. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

If you are running headers on your motor I"d suggest running a heat sheild on your starter or possibbly wrappuiing your headers.....Heat soak killed alot of my starters..

You installed a new starter, but did you install a new solenoid too, or reuse the old one?
I very much agree with the other poster about installing a starter heat shield. You might want to check on the starter nose brace too...not heat related but Chevy put them there for a reason.
Check the wires too. Headers have a bad habit of melting important wires down there, including the battery cable. Wrap those with some heat resistant wrap if you can.
