I have been struggling with a fuel Guage issue as well. My 76 has a problem with reading "over full" Yes, I most likely brought this problem on myself because I changed out the entire wiring harness, however I have carefully "back tracked" everything, I have tired different guages, and instrument clusters, only to find the same reading issue. In viewing schematics of trucks, it appears that though the years the fuel gage circuit is one of the most Un-changed. at this time I believe that it must be the sending unit, only because it is the only component that I have not replaced. Currently I have a Tach cluster from a 79, all guages work fine (Oh yea, except for the tach, which recently failed) except the bouncing fuel gage that reads almost full, all of the time. Any suggestions would help before I tear the tank out. it sure would have been much easier when the bed was off.!!! GRRRRRRRRRRRRR

If all the connections are good, and you've checked everything, I'd say you're in for dropping the tank...

;)TIP: before dropping tank. Check the ground on the top of the tank were the pick up is, then fallow the wire back to the frame check there to. Try to run a jumper line from the pickup ground to a good spot on the frame double check it. If that OK then check the ground to the gauge , ( batt to Frame ground ) .
