I need some help....left headlights on in my '84 Suburban yesterday (was hazy humid and 88 in Detroit) and found my battery totally discharged at 5:01 PM. Tried to jump start, and after hooking up the cables to a co-worker's, smoke came from behind the brake booster. A lot of smoke. I had turned on the headlights to see if the charge was getting thru to the truck. Now, later I returned and hooked up the jumpers and let my S-10 running for 15 minutes and the Suburban's dome light lights, the horn honks and the headlights come on, but the temp gauge is pegged, the voltmeter doesn't read and the ignition switch is ineffective....no click or nothin'. Did I burn a fusible link? How and why? The truck is factory orig (gas engine, no windows or locks) with single a/c with factory radio, even. Only non-factory item is an alarm, and I'd like to remove it and seems now is the time. Why won't the truck crank over....all I did was run down the batt and why the smoke? Any suggestions of what could cause the smoke on a perfectly functioning system that just had its lights left on?

There are a number of fuse links near the booster, look around that area and see if you find one blown off...

Just a wild guess, but maybe your battery was iffy to begin with and discharging it finished it off. I also have noticed that the OEM Delco batteries tend not to recover from complete discharges. Just guesses.
