Been lurking around and finally decided that this is a great frorum with a great group of individuals who love what i love and that's the heartbeat of America, the almight fullsize chevy truck.
i have a 83 chevy silverado that i recently purchased for 3,000, from a older gent, said it had a 350 turned out to be a 305, transmission was slow to go in to reverse, had a great excuse for that, overall the truck was in very good condition, paint still very good, red and cream 2 tone, interior beige with bench seat no tears in vinyl, new headliner and carpet, ac still runs, motor smokes a little, does not tick at all, runs like a champ with 256,000 miles
2weeks after purchase, tranny gear stuck in 2nd, so that quickly got replaced with a 700r 2 days ago ,so far so good, gives a good firm bump into second, tranny rebuilder said he put a lil shift kit in there for me.
that's about it for now fellas, give me some feedback on do you think i got a good deal and what do i need to do next.
body has no dents, no rust, bedliner is plastic , and came with good tires, no cracked glass, and everthing works even the clock, and all lights interior and exterior

Well first off Welcome to the board eatchevy. Well the truck sounds like a pretty good deal if the truck body & inner is in that good of shape. As for the motor she starting to show age with that mileage if she runs good for now driver, save up some money to rebuild it or get a good one. You all ready did the trans, so your up there one now. The next would be the check the steering, suspension & bushings that would be the next unless it was done. then it depens on what your looking for. And again welcome .

Welcome to the site. I was in the same boat as you. I found my truck handled simalar to a grain truck and that was something that was taking all the enjoyment outa driving the truck, so I started on the suspenion. That maybe a good place to start. Cause we all know that 305 still has another 300,000km left in her.

Well it your really want to know better take a compression test.To see it your piston rings are really bad or your just your valves seal & guides on the heads. IF you check motor section I beleve there part that talks about it but I can rember, not sure. But some one will help out if some question.

Niec truck good job of trying post pics you got them to work a few need a bit of tweeking you wear on the right track . ( The forth pic seat .This is one of the better one where you have a few [ IMG ] a the end. If you click on the modify tab to the right top of what ever post you will get to see what the top three look like, then at the bottom. But you did pretty good to get most off them up. Then just try to delete the extra one that are not suppost to be there click on the modify near the bottom of the post that will let you fix any of your own posts any time) [/img] Pontiac1976 has cleaned up some of your pic. But you had it right on on most just a few two meany [ IMG ]

Well after seeing it it looks pretty good eatchevy. Has the body work been done on it. Now as I said you should do that. If the body is really sound you got a pretty good deal as most of the truck looks nice for a 83 year truck.
I would drive it till you save up some money. If you find out it's valves seals, that not to much money if you know how to do it & have tools. If it does not get much better then the valve gides (heads have to redone) and or rings. Meaning tear down rebuild or another motor. then take another compression test. see how much better it is.

far as i know bodywork has not ever had to be done, the gent i bought it from said he never had it painted ro wrecked, so i don't know.......and that compression test will be taken into thought, because if the smoking can be fied for a good price vs a rebuild then i will go that route...............but in the future a 350 will be in there
