I have been stumped by an Ignition switch problem. When I bought the truck, the moron I bought it off of had removed the entire ignition tumbler(?) and had some rigged up push button switch wired to the starter. I purchased a new ignition tumbler and am attempting to put it into the column, but cannot get it to stay. I have the '77 Service Manual and followed the instructions but am able to still remove the tumbler from the column by simply pulling it out. Is there some sort of casting he may have broken that holds the tumbler in the column?

I think that even a '77 column uses a screw/pin to hold the cylinder in the housing. It would be about an inch long, with coarse threads just at the top near the head of the screw. The rest of it would be a smooth pin.
I couldn't find a pic for you to show exactly what Im talking about....

I know what you are talking about, I pulled one of those screws/pins out of an Astro Van at the 'yard. However, when I went to put the screw/pin in the column, there is no hole cast into the column for that screw. The only hole cast into the column that accesses the ignition tumbler/cylinder is a square hole that accesses the little black pin on the bottom of the tumbler that releases the key. I was going to machine a pin to put into the square hole, but after looking into it more closely it does not look like a pin placed in this hole will hold the tumbler in place. If I can get my digital working, I will send you a photo of the column.

OK, then the 77 columns are like my 69 Chevelle. There is no pin in them, but the IGN cylinder should have a locking tab on the side of it to hold it in the housing instead. If you have the locking tab on the cylinder and it's working, look inside the housing where that tab should hold and see if the housing has been broken inside there. I have seen a tab style column broken in that exact spot by someone using a slide hammer to pop the cylinder out to steal the car...

Did GM offer two different ignition housings? I am thinking that if so, maybe mine is the late model version of this cylinder. The only thing protruding from the cylinder itself is a lock ring to hold the cylinder housing onto the assembly, and a small black plastic tab that can be depressed to remove the key. However, there is an indentation in the cylinder housing that would line up perfectly with that screw/pin you spoke of earlier, which leads me to believe Unadvanced Auto Parts gave me the wrong IGN cylinder. Is the locking tab that your talking about a metal part? Where is it located at on the cylinder, front or back?

It's been quite a while since I changed the one in my Chevelle, but I believe it is either at the top or on the front of the cylinder when sitting in the seat and looking down at the column.

I think I am going to go cheap and drill a hole in the column to make that special screw/pin from the later models to work. Thanks for the help.

That might be an easy way to get it done, let us know how it turns out....
