Question about a lift and tire size

I know there is a chart posted here on tire fitment but i am still a lil bit comfused See.. I own a 1974 chevy pick up and i was thinking of going an 8 in lift with a 3 in body lift.. and i really wanted to go with 42 in tires but the guide states other wise so i was wondering if i can go with 42 or 40 in tires while using cut out fender flares? if any info can be given it would help out emensly.. Well, I know that in fourwheel and offroad magazine they are only running a six inch lift on their chev and running 39" crawlers with minimal trimming and no flares so I don't see how you wouldn't be able to run your 42's with the 8" lift. I am going to run 38 to 36 inch tires with a shackle flip and four inch springs in the front and they won't rub at all.
