I just got out from under my truck, I wired brushed numbers on my gear housing, they are GM 66. Currently I have 3.73 ratio in there, and was wondering if I can use this axel housing to put the original 3.08 back in? I have 350cui, 350THD, p235/75R/15 tires on truck, two wheel drive. Thanks in advance.

Well I think you can, but 12 bolt not sure on the housing . Because you will have to make sure the center part is big enough for you ring gear, the 3.73 is smaller then the 3.08 gear center section to bolt too.
I know if you have the 8.5 GM 10 bolt 3.08 housing you can drop down to a 4.56 but if you have the 2.73 housing you have to change housing's to at least 3.08, If it's the same you should be OK.
Do you have the other gear set yet.

No I don't have the set yet, but I have the 10 bolt housing on my truck. I am going to be trading body labor for gears or complete axel housing from another truck. A guy that goes to our church just put a 350 into an older S - 10. He has been wrenching for many years and also was an over the road truck driver. He needs some minor body work done to his project, and said we could probably work out a deal. I am glad that his truck is rust free.

This was IE. car diff as I know them a little better, spec this set.
This was a question because I knew that they had both but you had a Big 10 since they had both to pick from would have though that they would put the 12 bolt in a Big 10 . S10 diff housing should not work in the 73-87(length of diff), but the gears will if you have the 8.5 diff housing .
Now the Key to the gears switching is the center section being big enough in the housing the the 3.08 is going in too. Now I have to look it up but I think the smallest gear in a 12 bolt truck was a 3.08 . So I think the center should be OK I have not did that had a chance see it for the two that asking about. I was hope this get some to start to talk about it that know for sure.
Did you count the bolt on the diff cover to see what in there now.

Major GOOF on my part, sorry to get yer shorts in a bunch. I just crawled under my truck while it was on jackstands, and I do not have 10 bolt! It is a 12 bolt rear end! Found some numbers on outside of housing near right side axle tube, but not on tube itself, they are 3896839 with capital " N " centered underthe 6, hope this clears things up a bit. I am looking for any gear combo that would give me the best fuel mileage. I ain't gonna haul nothing but ass. Also I noticed that a standard pipe nipple has been used for a fill plug/male square end on it, it is seeping a bit of fluid from there, can I back it out and wrap teflon plumbers tape on it and reinstall, would that stop the seepage? Please bear with me on these posts, as I am learning new ares of trucks that I have never delved into before.

Well my shorts not in a bunch. lol but there shore stick to day hot & sticky hear. Well best fuel mileage combo might be to put a 3.08 after market any between the two diff # listed 3.42 .With a 700R4 I think the 3.08 be a little small of a gear with 235/75/15 should be good with 3.42 gear, & 700R4 trans, tires 235/75/15 if the Eng tuned well you should see good gas mileage .
If you want the 3.08 & 700R4 maybe 205/75/15 tires
