???As from 1 Jan 2006 Leaded Gas will not be sold in South Africa.
As I'm not sure how the 292, 76 model will take the unleaded gas, I was hoping you guys can help me.

Will it have a long term effect on the engine?

The 76 will not be so bad on unleaded. Long term effects on an old engine? Premature valve seat wear from the lack of lead in the fuel unless your engine has hardened valve seats. (which it probably does)

(BTW, we have not had leaded fuel here in over 20 years!)
