I have a carburetored 305 in the '86 ck 1500 I just bought. When running 87 octane it diesels when cutting off the engine and will not stop unless I manually stall it by popping the clutch. If I run 92 the problem goes away. Any idea of what I can do to avoid fueling up on supreme?

Usually when my truck does that it is because the timing is off.

Check to see if the Dist. is locked down tight, had that happen once to the engine when running it move the timming back and forth when I checked it a few times it was ok but the next road trip . it had tricked me too times till I checked the climp . ;D this may not be your problem.
