I have a 78'12bolt with 3.73 gears its an open with 6 lug bolt pattern.I also have a 91'10 bolt 3.73 with limited slip.Which of theses axels is stronger?I heard the later model 10 bolts were stronger than the earlier 12 bolts.Is this true?HELP ME OUT! THANKS HALLY :shrug:

I don't think one is substantially stronger than the other so i'ld probably go with the one that has limited slip. That will make more of a differance when your wheelin than whether its a 10 or 12 bolt. You can go just as far in 2wd with a locker as you can in 4wd with open diffs. Whats the application though, as in what size tires, engine, lift are you running and what type of driving do you do with it? I could give you a little better advice if i knew more of what you were doing and have. Hope this helped.

87 SHORTBED 355 9.7 Compression roughly 350 horsepower,4inch suspension lift 2 inch body 35 inch tires.The only off roading this one will get is sanddunes and a few smokeshows on the street.Maybe this info will help you. Thanks Hally

I'ld go with the limited slip since you'll be running in the sand alot and nothing looks more gay than a one tire smoke show. Sooooo much more cool when both tires are spinning. Sand isn't that hard on the axles either. Sounds like you got a nice rig man.

I think the 12 bolts are stronger cause they have a larger ring gear diameter but i don't know what the size differences are off the top of my head. IF you can figure out ring gear dia. and a spline count on the axle shaft them then the one with the most wins in my book.
