I noticed in the intro post for the 700r4, there is mentioning of a tranny cooler AFTER the radiator, but what if there is an external cooler INSTEAD of the radiator? I wonder if the tranny cooler in the radiator went bad and they cheaply fixed it by putting in a different one..

The cooling system in the radiator for the tranny is used in 2 ways. One to help cool the fluid odviously, and two to help warm the tranny up when first starting. Running an external cooler helps to cool the system more. Running only the external cooler will work just slow down the process of warming up the transmission on initial start up. :hbanging:

I highly recommend an external trans. cooler. Especially if you will be towing anything. It saves the trany.

B and M makes a good tranny cooler, its called the HI-TEK cooling system. It comes with tranny cooler temp. switch and has a fan built onto it. So the fan shuts on and off according to the sensor. It's easy to install and it works well. It's also fairly small in size. I installed it in my rig and have had no problems with temp. since then. When i was looking to buy one i found out that there are two types of tranny coolers. 1) old school style like your radiator where the fluid runs through tubes surrounded by fins. Or 2) where the fluid enters and then travels through the fins themselves, so there is no tube running through it. This second way is about 33% more efficient and so the whole unit is much smaller than style #1. I had a little to drink when i was buying it online so i opted for #2 with a fan, which is total overkill for my rig and what i do but i've been extremely happy with it even though i paid a little much for it. I gotta stop drinking while buying stuff on-line.
