The only aspect that actually has an effect is the effective spacing you gain by putting the unit under the carb. The swirls do nothing to help power/mileage.

I used to sell a lot of those "things". I don't think they do anything. And if they do I think the gains are very minimal

I run with a 14 x5 inch open element K&N all the time except when i go to smog it every 2 years. When the stock air cleaner is on there my truck is a dog and runs like a V6 and i hate to drive it. The K&N which only cost about $50 is good for at least 20 hp over stock in my truck.
