There are many ways to make more horsepower out of the Chevy engines, be it big or small block. The main thing to keep in mind is the intentions of the truck, will you drive it everyday, only on the weekends, or just for racing. When building an engine the best thing to do is make a plan. Build the engine according to the plan. If you are just rebuilding the bottom end now and plan to upgrade the top end later to make more power, then build the bottom end to go with what you plan to have later. If the buget allows then build it a little better, this way you know it will hold up. The main thing is to have a plan and build off of it. You don't want to stick a tunnel ram intake on top of a 350 and try to drive it to work everyday. Sure it can be done but you can build an engine with a single 4 barrel intake that will be better on gas, more of a pleasure to drive and get the same performance on the street. Something else to keep in mind, power adders like the turbo or blower, though at a steep price, will boost power levels and to an extent also increase gas milage. If the vehicle is driven daily it could in the long run pay for itself. Just keep in mind, you don't want to bolt on a blower and try to run 20lbs of boost on a stock engine and expect it to live a long time. Also 20lbs of boost isn't reasonable for everyday driving either.

Eight90 your presence here is always needed. The more gear heads that we have here to give advice the better.

Hey all. One thing I like to do for all around power increase and mileage is to add a few more degrees to the timing. Doing the total timing thing is better, but, it's amazing to see what a couple degrees advance can do with some motors. MIKE

Remember, bowtieguy the cylender heads are the key to making power.

That is very true. Building an engine to make power is almost centered around the heads. You need to know what size combustion chambers you are using to get the right pistons to get the correct compression ratio. You also want to use a set of heads that has a good flow. :rocking:

What about a 305. How much hp gains do you think a good set of headers would do? I'm trying to keep my mods limited. because I want to get a 350 or a crate motor in teh future. I want things I can transfer over. I got a good air filter. and good exhaust. just stock manifolds.

A decent set of "small tube" headers in the 1 5/8" primary range will help the engine breathe better, and not make you lose too much low end torque.
I like the FlowTech headers offered by Holley.

I have a set of Flowtech headers on my truck. They fit pretty good and the header bolts dont come loose near as much as other cheap headers. I would suggest them to others myself.

I'm running ceramic coated dynomax headers and they are a pain in the neck.

I'm running ceramic coated dynomax headers and they are a pain in the neck. I just bought those for my 83 dually. Wouldn't ya know it, they won't fit the manual shift components. I should have read the fine prints on the specs more carrefully.
