Well it can be done but you still have to take off the hinge on the side your working on but this can cause a lot of stuff bend or scratch bang(oh the window too) because the hood is heavy and has to be open and held up on the side your working on. That all I say if you doing it your self get lot of hand help. take a good look there is bolts at the bottom of the fender at the hinge the inner fender firewall and the rad support. To take the fender off . if you take off the hood keep the hood up take the bolts of at the bottom side of the hood mark the hinge bracket so you can put it back it the same place .

74 Chevy, Can you prop the side of the hood up using a 2X4 cut the right height? I just took both fenders off of one of my trucks this evening but they are for an 84 (I know that doesn't help you though)
I would think if you went from under the hood to the core support on the same side as the hinge you're talking about with a 2X4 cut to the same height as the other side when the hood is open, this should hold the hood open and allow you to remove the fender. Also you may need to use an adjustable strap hooking it to some point under the hood near the windshield and fix the other end near the core support area. This won't allot the hood to move any farther back than what you've adjusted the strap for so it won't hit the windshield or anything else.
One other note I would put a towel under the point on the hood so it won't din into anything, or scratch the paint on the hood or top part of the fire wall.
Hope this helps.
