There easy to check to see if there starting to fall apart or if the box or cab has fallen throw from under side. you could be right . It is getting to be about that time age wise that they might be rotten or missing.

If you get a new cab you pull the windshield out of the old cab and pull the vin plate out of it and put it in the new cab.

it don't matter if it matches, alot of people change things around on these trucks. You can still use your vin tag and title. It don't become illegal until you get a stolen vehicle and try swapping vin plates to hide it. If your still unsure you can call your local DMV office and ask them. Some state laws may differ from others.

As for the Cab Vin if you look at the post on dashes you see the brake down on the VIN where it is. Now if your truck got passed off some how as the Vin on your owner ship and does not match the Vin plate on the door post(door plier) you might have Trouble selling it or fraud. Wear you live did you have to have a safety on it bye DMV place and do you have it still. you and the guy doing the check are make sure the number match the bill and truck Vin. time it not wise to take off Vin plate . I call your local DMV office and ask them. the laws Vin plates as said by Bowtie. I know it's most places it's a no no to take the Vin off there is some way around it for restoring some times. The only way I can see doing this would be to buy another parts truck good around the 73-78cab register it then swap cabs. This way you safe paper wise. Then make the truck match the year or costume fit it with the year you like or as factory would have had it. As your truck has a lot of 73-76 inner parts bout 77-79 outer parts up to you to pic a year and or what year cab you can find between 73-79 the thing is that if you can fin a good enough parts truck in those years you can put a pretty nice truck back together with proper paper work & be OK with the DMV.

If this is a rebuild to keep then there is less to worry about, what Pontiac1976 said holds more true if you are doing this to resale it. There are limitations to what you can do, but in restoration aspects replacing the cab is alot like if you have the front windshield replaced, do I need a new inspection sticker or can I reuse the old one? Answer is you can reuse the old one. Removing the vin tag from one cab to place on a new cab is alright cause the vin tag is staying with the same truck, nothing illegal there. CONSIDERING you are trashing the old cab, meaning not trying to resale it using the same vin numbers. The vin numbers are like a social security number for a vehicle, you can not use the same one on 2 different vehicles. At the same time, the vin number also identifies the truck, when and where it was built and some options. BUT some people change engines in these trucks since most came with 305's. So that doesn't make that big of a deal. Alot of people also change out the front of the 73-80 model front ends to the 81-87 and even the 88-90 something blazer suburban styles. So change the looks of the years is not THAT big of a deal. The main thing is that you do not try to use the same vin on 2 different vehicles. So if you rebuild your truck by ordering a new cab you can swap the vin plate to the new cab, regardless of what year you make the body stile match. For instance my truck is registered in N.C. as an 86 Chevy Silverado Brown in color, but right now it is flat black. Insurance states it as an s-10, and don't ask me why, I have told them several times it was not.

What part of the dash is messed up, the pad or the metal part of the dash? The pad is easily replaced, the metal can be replaced out of a donor truck like from a junkyard if you can find one, the are hard to find around here. All the salvage (junk) yards are crushing anything 8-9 years old or more. The holes in the floor board are easy to replace if you have some knowledge of and access to a welding machine. The best advise would be price the floor board parts from like LMC and price a complete cab then account for the dash also, and take the best route. For me replacing the floor and dash would be the easiest and cheapest but I weld for a living and have access to a mig welder to put them in with.

I pretty sure that you could get a good metal dash backer used from a 73-78 truck in a wreck yard but the window has to be out to make it easier to get it out should be two bolts on each side then tuck under the window on the 73-75 for sure but I guessing on the 76-78 would be the same since the VIN is on the door plier. On the 79 to 87 the VIN is on the that part on the dash backer and does not come out unless you cut it out still have to 4 bolts two on each side.
Now question are you putting in a new style radio with cd in it . If you are I would not get a new dash backer yet . I would buy the radio first test fit it first. Because some newer radio you might have to cut that part of the dash but not that big. So it might be easier to weld in a plate it that area then to fit the radio better. But if your putting in a two knob old style radio then I would get the good used dash backer.
