Yes you mostly like will have to change out the little plastic gear in the trans( where the speedo cable goes to it.. Another way if you have have a tach, you can wire it ternary so you can see what RPM your driving @ some of the speeds at just cruse in third.( mark down the speeds and the RPM at that speed. Then after you change the diff you do it again write them down. See the different, then try to match the new diff RPM to the old speedo RPM's to see what speed your driving now mark it down on paper. After that you can go to a Trans shop tell them that you had a 3.73 diff and changed it to a 3.08 bring your paper with you . They should have a few gears there, IF THE GUY KNOW 350 TRANS WELL, he should all most know the right one you need ( they tell them bye color most times at the shops.. Unless you know the GM part # for the one you need because even at GM there a few set ups ( so you might have to try one or before you get the right one. most of them if there pretty good they be very close so you will have to only try one or two. Or if your friend still have the truck that the diff come out of and did a diff swap he might have the little plastic gear out of it that might close depending on tire size he was running with his set up.

Some more good news, I met a good ol' boy, South of me, that told me he could swap out my axle assembly for 150.00 then he asked me what I was going to do with my old axle with the 3.73 in it. I told him I don't have anywhere to store it, so I told him I would sell it to highest bidder....lol. He then said, my brother has been looking for a 3.73 for his 1978 Monte Carlo. He told me that he would ask hos brother if he was still looking, and if he is, then his labor would be free, just let him have my old set up. I said COOL! So now I have to wait til spring to do swap, cause they all hunt til spring. which is okay by me. So, my rear axel only cost me 25.00 plus a couple of axle tube flange gaskets. How much cheaper could that be? He said the red fluid may be clutch pack additive, if so, then I may have posi in that 3.08.

Just to let you know that the diff you have on the truck, is not the same as the Monte Carlo car has spring ( so it has different welded brackets on the diff tub's. Your spring "leafs on the truck rear" have different welded bracket on it. So he can only use the gears out of your truck diff if he has a 12 bolt in it. all 78Monte Carlo came with 10 bolts. you can make any thing work if you want to cut and re-weld the proper brackets on the truck diff, then you have to make sure the axles are the same length as the cars diff, in the same place you might have to cut tub's axles. Just a little info in case the buyer does not know it's not a bolt in & go. just do not want you get Griff from the sale.

I am assuming he is probably going to just use the gears, still a great deal. When I checked for gear set for 3.08 for my truck, they were 225.00, cheapest I could find. So I would imagine 3.73 gear set would cost alot more.

I got the numbers off my rear axle tube finally, after I found out that they were only 3/16th. of an inch high. Was looking for huge applied ( raised ) numbers.......D'oh! Had to read them upside down with a mirror no less. What I can tell is that it's made by GM of Cananda, on the 6th. day of the year, first shift. Axle ratio is AD. whatever that is. Will have to search internet further. The code as I see it is: A D K - M 0 0 6 - 1
