so i have searched the postings on your forum about the th350 to 700r4 swap but it doesnt totally make sense to me so i have some questions and please dont knock me if these have been answered, just point me and ill read here's my setup: 73 k10, 8 ft fleetside, 80s 350 (dipstick is on the passenger side) holley 750 dbl pumper headers and full 2 1/2 system here are the questions: 1)i am currently getting about 8 mpg will the 700r4 give me better mileage, and how much average. is it even worth the hassle? 2) i have read some places that say use my stock transfer case and get an adapter plate? then other places say i need to change output shaft? and then other places say to just yank a trans and transfer from a newer model and it will all bolt up..... what is right and what is bs 3) some forums are talking about different 700r4 cases and dust covers?? what do i need. 4) how to get it to shift to o/d ... i read somewhere about being able to use a vacuum switch, and also read somewhere could use a few things from the th350. ... thanks in advance for any help. if i get this done i am going to do a step by step blog/forum post to pass all this info on to the next guy because i seem to be able to only find bits and peices thanks, mike

OK I not expert on 4x4's but Now as far as the 700R4 in the 4x4 case is different then a 4x2 case But you know that. Now the 700R4 trans are the pretty much the same as a Trans goes except maybe gears & clutches. The better 700R4 Trans would be the newer one, 87 is the newest style case you can use the oles is the 83/84 late/early trucks. Cars 82/83 late/early. Now the guts in the trans got better in the late one up to 91 but you can not use the case unless you have the CPU to work it. But the better part in it input shafts clutches drum and other stuff. You can buy 4x4 7ooR4 from built from one of the three top shop that work on them $$$$. If your pretty good building them. You can buy a few cheap core trans you need 4x4 case 84-87 with the indent cable in good shape and if you can get lucky try to get speedo, 700R4mountand the carb bracket for the trans 84-87 case. Oh the dust covers are the same from 73-91 350/7ooR4 4x4 & 4x2 car & trucks some of the older performance truck cars have the Alum style and not the plastic a little bit stronger but heavier So it up to you and what your using the truck for most or you like the best. Get a 88-91 good parts trans700R4 for a lot of the up graded parts then take apart/ go to a shop with the both they can use all the good parts then you only have to buy a few parts any up grades you need ! deep pan/pick up Tq converter. if look up the topic on the 700R4 you can see one or too likes to the info on the O/D shift button & on this board that bowtie wrote.
I will look up the site later if you do not find it I pretty sure it is in at least two post in the Trans section
This would be great since it is hard to get a really good wite up with all the info on one place. some of the sueabl part on the 350 is the yoke drive shaft dust cover if it's the one you want.flywheel your cross member mostly if you got the one yr duel set up. your shifter un less it's a floor shifter. you need 700R4 shifter indcater with O/D 84-91. Now for the transfer Case i do not know what ones are the best for your set up I have to go by other 4x4 people and I not sure on if the all change able between 350's and 700R4 tranfer Cases. I may have forgot a few small things. I try get back to night find the psot for the link. good luck

Thanks for all the info... Someone also mentioned to me that if I get the newer 700 and transfer case I should be able to pretty much bolt it right up.. He suggested taking it from a late 80s suburban or blazer with OD. I was told all I really needed to do was loosen my motor mounts and slide the engine foreward a bit.... But we will see... I will probably do everything myself.. I have the facilities and the ability.. And I have more of those 2 things then money soo.... But anything I get done will be blogged and put on the forum with pics..
Thanks again. Mike
