Anyone that has one of these trucks that still has the factory radio in it knows that they are hard to hear. Yet there aren't alot of factory locations to add more speakers to improve this either. There are several ways to be creative in adding speakers in the cab. Adding sub woofers behind the seat is one. There isn't large amounts of space like in an extended cad to add speaker boxes on the cabs of these trucks so air space is limited. Installing bucket seats will help increase the availible space for a speaker box, but not everyone wants to get rid of the bench seat.
When the bench seat is left in and adding a pair of woofers, you can go as big as having 15" woofers behind the seat but you will be sitting really close to the dash and still be lacking the optimum air space for them to work properly. 12" woofers will work better but you will still lack either comfort, and/or airspace needed to work properly. Idealy 10" woofers are the largest to get the best of both. Unless you choose to use only a single woofer.
If you have bucket seats and handy with wood then you can run a pair of larger woofers using the area between the seats, Console area, as extra air space and still have a good sitting comfort. I have personally, with chevyheavens help, installed a pair of 10" subs behind the stock bench seat in his truck with plenty of comfort and air space. Still having a good quality sound.
In my truck I have a pair of 10" subs behind bucket seats, adding more air space to the box from the console area. This adds a deeper harder bass due to the larger air space in the box. I currently have too much air space. It is possible to have a pair of 12" subs in the speaker box I have and still have adequate air space for them. The main thing to keep in mind when adding subs to your truck is the amount of leg room you need to drive comfortably and what kind of seats you intend to leave in the truck. If you are planning to install subs and looking for some advice we can help you.
