Hi All,
I like manual shifting. I feel the vehicle has more control whilst driving.
However, whilst manuals are good for fun, here are a couple of my tips for keeping them running:
1) Make sure that the transmission fluid is changed fairly regularly. I like to change mine like every 20,000 miles just to keep the transmission running as slick as it can do.
2) Look out for clutch judder on take off. This will begin to happen if the clutch is slipped badly in the past and it overheats and warps the friction (driven) plate, in similar fashion to an overheated brake disc. If the clutch starts to judder, it will put pressure on the transmission's input shaft and therefore the internals to run out of line. This will induce premature wear of all the transmssion bearings and the gears inside themselves.
Hope this helps somebody,
Stan.
