My 83 chev 4wd w/th700 on a carte 350 motor just went pop the other day and left me sitting with no forward or reverse. no warning signs just pop. So is changing this trans with a th350 from a 77 fwd (both trucks are long beds) doable with ease or would it be better to fix the th700
Thanks Red

Swapping out the 700r4 for a turbo 350 isn't hard at all for a 2wd truck. I don't know for sure but I would say that the transfer case should be a simple swap also. As far as rebuilding the 700r4, to get it done good will probably cost $1500 or better. If the 700r4 is an 86 or older model it would be worth it to find a newer 700r4 to have rebuilt. The turbo 350 would be the cheaper way to go and fairly simple swap. Basically it should be an ubolt replace and rebolt back up.

It depends on how much the truck is driven. If you're driving the truck 20-30 miles one way to work everyday, and with gas prices going the way they are, I would definitely stay with the 700R4. The TH350 would be cheaper but your mileage would be hurting.

It will also depend on gears and tire size also. If your running like say a 3.73 gear with 38's then a turbo 350 will still be good cause the final gear will be more like a 3.08 with the big tires. Just something to keep in mind. Also if you plan to run a tire larger than 35 you will have to go with a newer version 700r4 built good with a good gear or it will burn it up too. The 700r4 in factory trim wont handle a lot of drag, the big tires will be the same as trying to pull a trailer.
