I just got back from guy's house that bought old rear axle from my truck, he doesn't want it now, because it is only limited slip. And now I have to store it! . We found out that it is a Richmond gear set, he told me that, those are really good brand, their are 4 spider gears in it, he told me if someone wanted a true full time posi, that they could weld all 4 spiders into a single unit instead of buying a clutch pack . The numbers we found on the ring gear are; Richmond 80 - 0540 - 10 then 2two interlocked horizontal diamonds, then 5 8620 I have no idea how to figure these numbers out.

I looked the numbers up on Richmond's website and got this info for ya, it is a 3.73 gear set for a 12 bolt truck rear end. The numbers you listed is the part numbers for the ring gear if you were to order it alone. If that rear end does NOT have a clutch pack in it then it is NOT a limited slip rear end, its an open rear end. Limited slips have a clutch pack in it. A true posi unit will have some form of a locker type piece in the center. A solid posi will have a spool in the middle that connects the 2 axles solid not allowing any give just like if you welded the gears up on an open rear end.

The best way to find out is to call Richmond gear tech line or summit, they sell them. Yes there pretty good after market. Oh there is a few time I try-ed to point out that the term posi is used to much and that I said a few time the Posi= ( limited slip ) because all most nothing is posi real true posi from the 1973-200_ cars light trucks even earlier but I cannot break down the models & years that well but it started back in 1964. So people think it sound kool, it's shorter print, they do not know, they heard the term said and they use it. true posi they want both tires in the rear to turn the same time in the same way, makes turn drag one rear tire side way witch is hard on the tires and the outer bearings. That way GM went to (LIMITED SLIPS) both tire will go at the same time most of the time, when one brakes lose the other one grabs ( when the clutches work right it limiteds the power to the rear wheel the getting to much gives the one that is not slipping). you get the best of road race rear and drag race rear end with the limited slip gears (with clutches). As BowtieGuy has said to this should give you good idea now. This is the long version story hope this help in the years to come or others.

Okay, Thanks guys. Whatever I have, How much is it worth there's about 40,000 miles on it. Are open gears better for mileage than limited slip? My 3.08 spins right wheel, then left grabs. Gotta go look for a tach. Speedo reads 65mph. and I'm passing everyone on the freeway. Feels like 80mph, from my experience with my truck.lol

well with out seeing it looking at it checking it out in person $50-$180 If it was all in good shape had new bearing sealsgood clean oil, new clutches, cleaned housing/ maybe painted $200.-$500.
limited slip would be better for trackion you just have to watch road grades some time it tends to pull the rear to the ditch if start to spin but when you know how to drive with it get use to driving with them there nice. Oh nce the clutches wear out then it's like driving a open diff.

True Posi is for Drag racing or welded gears . open or Limited Slip or the street or track are about the same for miles but there has been on studs done on them as I know .
