My 1978 gears had been changed from 3.08 to 3.73 and I am not ever gonna need to pull a house down anytime soon ;D. I would like to know if I can have just the gears changed back to 3.08 without having to replace whole axel assembly, the cover has 12 bolts in it, and it is on a 1978 Silverado Big 10/C10 also, would I get better mpg's from the swap? Getting 14 to 15 mpg's highway right now. thanks for any info....... I am a body and frame man, have been for 22 years, so I have little experience with inside guts or a rear end.........Larry

To your question yes you should be able to swap in the 3.08 gears as long as there the the set for the rear end you got. you should See s bit of a difference in fuel but will depend on driving habits & your trans & cam to. a good 700R4 would help even more.

No, i'm pretty sure that the 3.7 series carrier goes up....Not down. I think the 3.08 will have to use a 3.4 carrier.

I Know if it's a 10 bolt should be 3.08 and up carrier . If it's the 12 you might be right on the 3.42
I can't remember now but the truck he has now is a S10 style truck 1/4 ton and it should have a 10 Bolt . On bigtendude old 78 truck he changed the gear and housing together back to a 3.08 (12 bolt) and about 6-8 month ago. The truck had a crash he's got a new 1/4 ton as said .
Oh thanks for the info help primesdime Welcome to the board . All info welcome Pontiac1976
