So I have a 1979 pickup with a 383 stroker in it and a few times now ive had this problem where while driving down the road it will get up to about 50mph or so and then slowly begin to fall on its face till it eventually dies all the way out leaving me to coast to my doom. First thing i thought it would be was my fuel pump so i bought a new one on top of that bought a new edelbrock carb and replaced the inline fuel filter still no results so I also changed the tank selector switch cuz it was going out after that I was sure I fixed the problem till today when it did the same thing to me. When i got it home I Opend the hood noticed the fuel filter was a bit dirty so i replaced it, I can see little to no fuel going thru the filter while at a idle. I also blew air thru all the hoses into a bottle to see if it was clogged and still nothing that may lead to my problem. Im running out of ideas!!! I even tried bypassing the fuel selector switch and running one line straight from the tank to the pump and no change.

First thing that come to mind you changed the fuel pump. Is the pump a stock mechanical or a electric. if it's got electric is the air out of the lines. Did you check the gas cap to make sure the cap is holding pressure in the system. If it's the mechanical pump is it pumping out enough pressure. stock 5-6 psi you might need some where in the 7-22 psi

Thanks so much for the reply. It is a mechanical fuel pump i changed it about a month or two ago and have had no problems now all of a sudden its getting no flow, I have yet to check the pressure because I am lacking a pressure gauge but its looking more and more like that's what im going to have to do in order to rule that out. I have not checked the gas cap yet... I dont know how to go about doing that.

So did you get a chance to check the pump. Have you checked the carb filter make sure it's not plugged. Does the carb pump a gas shot on wide open throttle., if you do not get gas after a few try's. Try to disconnect the fuel line at carb - put in some kinda jar so fuel does not get all over the place wrap a old rag around the top try to turn over the truck a few times get some one keep eye on the jar if fuel comes out good. then it might be the carb. this will let you know that your getting fuel up to the carb but not out of the carb . Next place to check if your not getting gas thereat the line to the carb would be out the out side of the pump. do you have a fuel filter under the body other then the sock on the pick up in the tank. check to see if the gas is getting to the pump. check for bent lines or clasped rubber hoses from tank to carb. good luck let us know if you get it fixed & what it was.

I put a fuel pressure gauge that i made on the line just b4 the carb to see what kind of pressure i was getting and up until today i was getting about a steady 4-6 pounds at a idle so I was driving it around with no problems put about 50 miles on it since then and today on my way home it starting acting up when i was going 60 down the highway it dropped down to 50 so i pulled over checked the gauge and it was reading 0-3 pounds at a idle. I can see the inline fuel filter that i put in just b4 the mechanical pump and it is clear this would be the second time i have replaced it. I took a air hose and blew out all the lines in hopes of finding a clog but nothing. I also switched to the second tank when i was on the side of the rode and checked the pressure to see if it was in the tank and there was no change in the psi. I would not think that a 3 month old pump would be giving me problems alread esp since I had this happen b4 I replaced it the first time. Im at a loss here Ive tryed everything i can think of and everything people i talk to think of. I would try and take it in somewhere but i just started my new job so im broke more or less.
