Your pretty much right it a lot easier to work with the 77-80 & the 81 -90 con version then going with the 77 back to the 73-76 to use the 73-76 inner panels but it can be done . You will have to cut out a section of the old inner steel 1 or 2 inches behind the panel at the top. The bottom 1or 2 inches up behind the inner panel but down to the underside just passed the bend this will hide most of the welds. This way all most all the welds are hidden less body work only at the edges you will have to adjust a bit for your door and option of inner panel trim. Or you can cut out all the spot weld and welds replace the whole inner part of the door to your new good door. Or if your door is mostly good you could just cut their welds and spot welds re place the outer door sheet metal on your old door. SO it really ups to you how good the parts of the door are as what way your go. Unless you like the 77-80 full inner panels better. So it depends on how you want your truck to be restored factory or upgrade or a bit of costume. Or it might be better to try to trade that door to someone for a good 73-76 door. That all I can think of as of now I hope you get some help out of this good luck.
