The speedometer on my truck doesn't work, the cable turns behind the dash when I drive, and the speedometer works when I stick something in the back and turn it, but for some reason the cable isn't rotating the speedometer mechanism. It will clip into the back, so that isn't the problem. I figure either the cable or the speedometer is stripped, any ideas? Also, are there any after market speedometers that work with a cable driven system? I might just replace all the gauges with aftermarket ones. Thanks!

Well there is a few places to look . Trans where it hooks to the side there is a little plastic gear that gets wore or striped. ( you might have a gear reduction unit before it goes to the trans.) This is to correct tires & trans set up that changed rear gears at the dealer. Or late factory change. Cable is broken or the one of the ends is broken or popped out of the hook up if work was done on the trans, Speedo, gear reduction unit. or the Speedo not working or the Speedo connection is striped..
Check the cable you have to take it off look at both ends for wear. Then try turning it see if the other end turns, put one finger on the opposite side to see if you feel it turn if it does not turn at the same rate it most likely snapped ( Oh do not kink the cable ) That would be one more thing to look for bad kinks in cable. Check the gear reduction unit it you see wear or hear a lot on noise get a better one new one. check the Speedo wear, where the cable hooks up it should be plastic square looking it should move free needle should move if it spins flick of the finger spin motion. There still could be other gears in the Speedo not working.

After much problem solving, turns out the metal square drive at the dash end had become un crimped. I just re attached it using some vice grips, problem solved. Its real jerky below 30mph or so but I guess that's to be expected from an old cable driven speedo. Thanks!

Your welcome. If it's starting jerk a little there some striped gears wear some where or it could be a little dirty at the speedo . I would try to lube, clean with W/D 40 then. Lube with White grease in the tip where you put the metal square . Then recheck rotate work it in for both lubes. The speedo might be starting to give you signs that it starting to wear out.. I would all so lube the cable with white grease when you have it off .
